, the nra, was holding their annual convention a week later in colorado. in denver, colorado, only about a 20-minute drive from where the columbine massacre happened. the nra said they would not cancel their conference because of columbine, but they did scale it down to a one-day event. it had been planned to be a three-day thing. and in response to the tragedy at columbine and the awful coincidence of the nra conference that was being planned for just a few days after the shooting the nra put out a statement in the form of a letter to its members that said, "our spirits must endure this terrible suffering together and so must the freedoms that bring us together. we must stand in unshakeable unity, even in this time of anguish." about a week after that an nra spokesman said it really was "not the most appropriate time and place to debate public policy." so not a good time to talk about policy. that was the nra's response to columbine. fast-forward almost exactly eight years to april 16th, 2007. a student at virginia tech in blacksburg, virginia shoots and kills 32 people before killing h

weapons and closing the gun show loophole. but the nra opposes both of those measures and in the past, the nra has successfully fought gun control legislation by threatening to attack any politician who doesn't take their hard line. even after last year's tragic gabby giffords shooting, gun control introduced by chuck schumer and carolyn mccarthy could not get passed congressional republicans. the justice department didn't get very far either. attorney general eric holder created a task force on gun control but most of its proposals were shelved as the election and the fast and the furious inquiry heated up. this time, it seems as though, however, there might be a bit more cooperation. today, speaker john boehner said he could be willing to consider vice president biden's recommendations on gun control. >> we join the president in mourning the victims of that horrible tragedy in connecticut. he's appoint vice president biden to lead a commission and when the vice president's recommendations come forward

the administration will act is still in question. meanwhile, nra president pierre will publicly address the newtown tragedy tomorrow. it is the first time the nra has addressed it. when you say why has it taken this long, this is a dramatic shift for the nra overall. they have remained silent following other mass shootings. today, we will have live coverage here on the cspan accords. while we wait for the nra to get under way, we spoke earlier with a republican member of congress to get his thoughts on last night's action and the house on fiscal cliff legislation. > >> what happened inside the caucus last night at 7:30. >> it was about the short as one i have ever seen. john boehner said he did not have the vote and we passed the bill, two bills that harry reid has been sitting on and the senate. he said he is available to negotiate. mr. kantor said we would be called back within 48 hours notice and see you after christmas. that's all it was. host: are they negotiate from a position of strength? guest: the speaker has been negotiating as much as he can -- i think the president has not been dealing in good and faith and not negotiating at all. he gave us a plan that was his budget that was voted on in the senate, 99-0 against his budget and in the house, he gets zero votes for it also. that is what the president put on the table. i don't think he has been negotiating in good faith. we need to find solutions

say the nra uses money, power, scare tactics to hold lawmakers hostage to the agenda opposing gun regulations. i want to bring in richard painter and the law professor of minnesota and joining us from minneapolis who wrote an opinion piece, an op ed in "the new york times," and a protection racket where people are controlled by organized criminals, corrupt politicians. when you hear the head of the nra today say that gun laws are not the answer it really is arming people, arming somebody in that school that could have saved lives, what is your response? >> well, we -- of course, should focus on mental health issues. we should have fewer violent movies and video games and have better security in our schools, but nothing is going to change the fact that the last thing those children saw if they looked up, and i hope they didn't, is the end of a weapon manufactured by his financial backers. lapierre says if one of those teachers had a weapon they could have killed the gunman and could have saved lives and that was the potential outcome had there been someone armed in that school. >>
